Hit the break

"Hit the break" / "put on the break" / "stepped on the break pad" ...
but I could not stop the car.

What is the natural way of saying? (when you press break pad)

This is a question I have never really considered before. All three ways are used.

"Hit the break" might be said more often when you are telling someone/commanding them stop the car immediately, and you don't have much time, kind of you might just say "stop!" when something is about to be hit. This is also heard when telling a story, like "... and then I had to hit the breaks (so I wouldn't hit them)!" It kind of carries the same feel as "slamming the breaks" - stopping ASAP. I would say out of the three it is used the most.

"put on the break" and "stepped on the break pad" sound more like what you do while you are explaining something to another person or telling a story. "... and then you step on the break to stop." (that is how you stop) ... "put on the break", hmm, I would not say this is as natural sounding, but it is still used.

In general, if you are telling someone to stop the car, just saying "stop the car" might be just as natural to say.
